Baltimore, Md. (September 22, 2011) of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra in the center (BSO) 2011-2012 season long celebration of women’s revolution in the Swiss composer Arthur Honnegers 1935 semi-staged oratorio “Jeanne au DARC B? Cher (Joan of Arc in action Bet) to commemorate the 600th anniversary of the French heroine Joan of Arcs birth. BSO Music Director Marin Alsop and the BSO will join forces with the Concert Artists Vocal Baltimore, Johns Hopkins Peabody Choir, Morgan State University Choir and the Peabody Children’s Chorus concert on Thursday, 08:00 and Friday, November 17, November 18, 8:00 at Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall. The program will also be conducted in New York city’s prestigious Carnegie Hall on 19 November 20:00 Featured singers including sopranos Tamara Wilson and Real This Chang, mezzo-soprano Kelley OConnor, tenor Timothy Fallon, bass Morris Robinson and Cynthia Millar on Martenot waves. Grammy Award-winning director James Robinson will provide the stage direction. Editors Note: casting the main roles of Joan of Arc, and brother Dominic will be announced later. January 2012 marks the 600th anniversary of the heroine, soldier and martyr Joan of Arc is born. Oratorio “Jeanne au DARC B? Cher explores his final moments, as it enters into dialogue with her confessor, and examines her life flashbacksincluding heresy trials, until it reaches peace with God in the fire. This composition was commissioned in 1934 and an aging actress of the Russian star of the Ballets Russes Ida Rubinstein, who wanted to perform a new work of Jeanne d’Arc. She called on the French poet / playwright Paul Claudel to write the libretto and Les Six composer Arthur Honegger. Honegger not only has the music of Joan of Arcs elements of his era, such as folk and plainchant melodies, but also include more modern sounds, including part of the saxophone and the new French instrument, called the Wave martenot. Premiere has been highly praised and encouraged Honegger and Claudel once more after a La Danse de morts.
